Area’s ‘other’ Jon Hall glad to be here

There’s a new Jon Hall in town, but this one is involved in construction, not the auto business, and is not related to the late namesake for Daytona Beach’s Jon Hall Chevrolet.

This Jon Hall, 37, is the majority owner of Longwood-based Jon M. Hall Company, a site development company his father, Jon M. Hall Sr., started in 1974.

The senior Jon M. Hall retired from the construction business in 2008.

The company recently opened an office in Daytona Beach where it is doing site development work for a number of projects including the Tanger Outlets mall under construction on the east side of I-95, and the Integra Sands luxury apartments complex on Williamson, just north of LPGA Blvd.

Hall, whose primary residence is in Maitland, owns a second home in New Smyrna Beach.

Growing up in the north Orlando area, Hall said he knew about the Daytona Beach auto dealer, Jon. E. Hall, who died in 2001.

In fact, it may have helped him get out of a speeding ticket.

“I got pulled over by a traffic cop for speeding in Daytona Beach when I was probably 19,” Hall recalled.

When Hall showed the police officer his driver’s license, which identified him as Jon Hall Jr., “He asked me if my dad was Jon Hall and I said yes, because he is Jon Hall, clearly knowing he was referencing the car dealership but he wasn’t specific. I gave him a simple response in hopes it would go in my favor and it did. So I owe the Hall family a favor on that one.”

EXPANDING TO DAYTONA

Hall said he decided to sublease an office space at the Mason Commerce Center, at 1180 N. Williamson Blvd., because of all the projects his company is working locally, which includes the Venetian Bay community in New Smyrna Beach.

“I want to establish a strong presence in that area. We’ve been working there for 10 years. It’s time we put our roots in the ground and build our relationships locally,” he said.

The Daytona Beach office is staffed by three workers but could add more people in the coming months, he said.

“We’re basically a horizontal construction company,” Hall said. “What that means is we clear the land, we dig the retention ponds and build the building pads. We also install the utilities on the project … and we also do roadway construction, including sidewalks and curbs.”

Hall said his dad and step-mom are full-time residents of New Smyrna Beach as are his aunt and uncle.

“I’m really excited to get our Daytona Beach office off the ground. We want to hire as much local talent as we can,” he said.

RITCHEY STICKING WITH CARS

Glenn Ritchey, the current owner of Jon Hall Chevrolet, said he’s aware of the Jon M. Hall Company, whose signs at project sites have prompted some to ask the veteran auto dealer and former Daytona Beach mayor whether he is branching out.

“A lot of people ask me if I’m in the construction business now,” said Ritchey, who took over the Nova Road auto dealership from his former boss. “I tell them, no, we’re busy enough selling cars.”
